Why I Create

I am Hochungra—People of the Big Voice—and an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

My mind has always overflowed with ideas that words could never quite capture. I began creating original work in 2018 through wood carving, stepped away for a time, and returned in 2024 to focus deeply on drawing and painting. By 2025, I reconnected with traditional craft through flatwork and loom beadwork, continuing to refine my techniques across each medium.

In my culture, art is medicine. It speaks what language cannot embody and carries the spirit and energy with which it is made.

In a turbulent world on the brink of change, this work serves as my voice—a way to share my lived experiences and perspectives during an era when so many of us feel silenced. Our relatives continue to go missing, our lands are exploited for profit, our waters are polluted for corporate gain, and we are repeatedly misled by those sworn to protect the public interest.

I am not a politician, scholar, or policymaker with institutional power. As a Two-Spirit, mixed-race Native person, I often find myself walking between worlds, sometimes unwelcome even within my own community. What I do possess is the vision and the hands to transform raw, lived truth into striking visual art.

My hope is that these pieces resonate with you, and that they invite you to sit with a perspective you may have never considered before.
