Why I Create
I am a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, we call ourselves Hochungra, people of the Big Voice. I have always wanted to learn to create art, a mind overflowing with ideas that words could never quite fit around. I began making original art in 2018 with wood carvings and put my tools away until 2024 when I began to truly work on drawing and painting. In 2025 I began reconnecting to traditional craft in the form of flatwork and loom beadwork. I continue to hone my skills. In my culture we say these things are medicine, they offer a way to express things that words cannot embody and carry the energy with which they are made.
With a turbulent world on the brink of change, these pieces are the voice I use to express my experiences and perspectives in a time where many of us feel we are being silenced. Our relatives are going missing, our lands are being resourced for profit, our water is being polluted for corporate gain, and we are being misled by those who have sworn an oath to serve the publics interest.
I am not a politician, scholar, or expert that holds sway over these things. I am often not even welcome amongst my community as a 2 spirit mixed race native. What I do have is the ability to take my experiences and turn them into striking artworks. I hope that these pieces speak to you, and that you may consider a perspective you have not seen before.
